Advising the clean energy sector on policy and regulatory change

Hutcheson Associates supports businesses in the UK’s energy sector to monitor and engage with the process of policy and regulatory change.

We work with our clients to home in on threats and opportunities, and to actively shape policy outcomes through direct engagement with decision-makers and influencers. We believe these are increasingly important parts of risk management and business strategy as the energy transition gathers pace and government shapes markets to deliver net zero.

What We Do

We provide bespoke and tailored support and advice to each of our clients, whether a quick summary of the latest policy proposals, a deep dive on a regulatory issue, or sitting round the table on a relevant CUSC working group.

Ongoing and recent assignments have included Connections Reform, the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements, evolution of the Contract for Difference framework, grid charges, the Capacity Market, changes to the UK ETS, and emerging business models for hydrogen, CCUS and Greenhouse Gas Removals.

Our Clients

Our clients range from small independent companies through to global businesses, with interests spanning solar power, onshore and offshore wind, hydrogen, energy storage, and industrial decarbonisation. But all have one thing in common: a clear focus on the decarbonisation of the energy sector and the wider economy.

Hutcheson Associates has provided Aukera Energy with invaluable insight and advice across many aspects of UK energy regulation, guiding us through often complex policy detail, allowing our business to shape current and future business strategies

About Us

Hutcheson Associates was founded in 2017 by Niall Stuart in response to the ever-increasing pace of policy change and infrastructure delivery associated with the decarbonisation of our economy.

Niall leads Hutcheson Associates’ strategic advice to clients and our engagement with key policy makers and the individuals and organisations which will shape the outcomes of policy and regulatory change. He brings extensive experience of engaging with government, regulators and industry bodies, and successfully supporting and representing clients.

He was previously Chief Executive of industry body Scottish Renewables, leading the organisation’s work on issues such as renewable energy targets, transmission charges, and Electricity Market Reform. During that time Niall was a member of the First Minister’s Energy Advisory Board and co-chaired the Scottish Government’s Renewable Industry Advisory Board.

We work with a number of expert and experienced associates across public and regulatory affairs, public relations and local stakeholder engagement. This ensures we can put together the right team of people to manage and deliver your project.
